Following the arrival of Jose Mourinho at old Traffford, Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has turned out to be among the most influential players under the Portuguese manager this season and the in-form midfielder has revealed why he is such an important figure in Jose Mourinho’s team.
The Spaniard admitted he has become a regular starter and an influential figure for Jose Mourinho because of his ability to play a deeper role in Manchester united’s midfield and it is a switch to a deeper midfield role that earned him his first international call up for the Spanish national team.
The midfielder revealed he has failed to impress in the No. 10 midfield role at Manchester united but has seen his confidence boost after playing and excelling in a midfield deeper position.
Speaking with Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, the Spaniard said; “I know what Jose Mourinho demands of me and personally I am doing fine. I believe when you play the No. 10 role in a club like Manchester united you are expected to score a minimum of 15 goals per season and I’m not used to doing that.”
“I hope to do it but I’ve learnt to adapt. When you see an available space in the team, trying to adapt is the most intelligent thing to do and that is exactly what I’ve done. In my new position, I try to help out the defence, win back possession and also initiate attacks. I think Jose Mourinho is happy with the way I play”.
Jose Mourinho hailed the Spaniard for his performance against Manchester city in the EFL cup saying the Spaniard played the game with a different level of pressing and intensity.
Ander Herrera also revealed his dream is to represent the Spanish national team and insists he’s doing all he can to secure a place in Julen Lopetegui’s squad. “I haven’t lost hope and I’m sure Julen is aware of my progress and all I would do is to continue to work hard and fight for a spot in the national team”.
